Cosmo Specialty Fibers, Inc. was created to restore, restart, and operate the former Weyerhaeuser Specialty Cellulose Mill in Cosmopolis, Washington

Highlights

  • Founded in 1957 by the Weyerhaeuser company
  • The mill was converted into a dissolving grade pulp mill in 1962 and eventually mothballed in 2006 after Weyerhaeuser determined that the mill was sub-scale and non-core to its operations
  • High purity cellulose is used as feedstock to produce a variety of consumer products including: LCD screens, pharmaceuticals, paints, textiles. and athletic clothing

Initiatives

  • Gores and the Cosmo Specialty Fibers management team refurbished and restarted the mill
  • Over 200 jobs created, many of them filled by former Weyerhaeuser staff and over 95% employed from Washington State
  • Strong execution against operational milestones since opening, and reached full production capacity by the end of 2011
