July 27, 1998
Acquisition results in "best-of-breed" software development management solution for IS organizations Boulder, Colo. and Burlington, Mass., July 27, 1998-Artemis Management Systems, the world's largest independent project management software and consulting company, today announced it has finalized the acquisition of Software Productivity Research, Inc. (SPR), a leading software estimation and measurement firm founded by industry authority Capers Jones.

In the face of industry trends of diminishing project success rates, Information Systems (IS) managers are actively seeking complete life-cycle management solutions to replace existing point solutions for managing their critical processes, projects and resources. Artemis has seized the lead in satisfying this demand by assembling a comprehensive solution for software development management. "Artemis is committed to delivering best-of-breed software management solutions for IS organizations," says Steven C. Yager, Artemis' president. "SPR's unique ability to provide knowledge-based estimation and assessment methodologies represents a fundamental element in our comprehensive offerings to this rapidly expanding market. This acquisition is an important step towards helping IS organizations succeed through improved software development life-cycle management." The combination of Artemis Views? and SPR KnowledgePLAN? provides IS departments with a complete solution for managing all phases of software development projects, including knowledge-based estimation, multi-project planning, budgeting, resource tracking, quality measurement, and analytical reporting. KnowledgePLAN recently won Software Development Magazine's 1997 Productivity Award. SPR, which will operate as an independent subsidiary of Artemis, is headquartered in Burlington, Mass. Charles Douglis, president of SPR, commented, "This acquisition will significantly increase technology and knowledge resources to support the enhancement of both SPR's and Artemis' products. SPR is excited to be working with Artemis on establishing KnowledgePLAN as the industry standard for software project estimation worldwide." "SPR's relationship with Artemis signals a move toward an integrated management tool suite that will share common interfaces and data repositories and will by definition simplify the often tedious tasks associated with IS project management," commented Capers Jones. "This is good for SPR, good for Artemis, good for our collective customer base, and good for the project management community." Effective immediately, Jones will assume the role of Chief Scientist for Artemis Management Systems. This acquisition is also strategic for Artemis' parent company, Gores Technology Group. It demonstrates that Gores will support Artemis' strategic acquisitions in this rapidly growing market. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
